Mr. George Singleton

Greenville, South Carolina - Alpha Phi Alpha Greenville Foundation (AGF) and Gamma Gamma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity have selected Mr. George Singleton as their 2023 Martin Luther King, Jr. Citizenship Award (MLKCA) Winner. "Mr. Singleton's outstanding accomplishments were very recognizable by our selection committee, and we are very pleased to select him to join our list of winners," said Furman Jackson, Chair of the AGF Selection Committee and current President of Gamma Gamma Lambda Chapter. A list of the past MLKCA award winners is available here.

The award will be presented at our 44th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Celebration, which will be on Saturday, January 7, 2023, via Eventbrite and hosted on Zoom. The Scholarship Celebration is the oldest celebration of MLK Day in Greenville, SC, with the first event being held in 1977. It has been co-sponsored by Gamma Gamma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and Furman University since 2008.

Last year, Mr. William W. Brown, Founder and Board Chair of Legacy Early College, was selected as the 2022 Martin Luther King, Jr. Citizenship Award winner, which be presented at the Celebration. In addition to presenting the winner of this year's award, the Celebration features a Local Pastor's message in the Greenville Area.

Due to the COVID19 Crisis, we have again decided to hold our luncheon as a hybrid celebration with virtual and in-person options. The MLK Scholarship Celebration seeks to raise funds for the Foundation's efforts to support local youth in the Upstate of South Carolina. We are also proud to continue to host the first and oldest Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Event in the Upstate of South Carolina and our Martin Luther King Jr. Citizenship Award Winner selection.

Proceeds from the Scholarship Gala support the Luke H. Chatman Scholarship for local high students and fund other community efforts such as the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Youth Program, Dr. Rudolph Gordon College Fair, and Joseph Vaughn Oratorical Competition. See Alpha Phi Alpha Greenville Foundation website for more information, www.alphagreenville.org.

We are also proud to have Reverend Vinson Royal of Springfield Baptist Church of Greenville, SC, give an inspiring message about Dr. King’s Legacy and the events of 2023. Our event will again feature live entertainment by the Jamie Wright Band of Greenville, SC.

A listing of the MLK 2023 events and their profiles can be found here and on the Alpha Greenville Foundation's website at www.alphagreenville.org.
