Greenville, South Carolina: The Gamma Gamma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., in partnership with the Alpha Greenville Foundation, is sponsoring the Joseph Vaughn Oratorical Competition on March 14, 2026, starting at 10 AM at Legacy Early College, 900 Woodside Avenue, Greenville, SC 29611. The event will be streamed via Zoom on https://bit.ly/JVOC2026
The theme for 2026 is ."Beyond the Ballot Box: Defining and Defending the True Meaning of Civic Responsibility.” The focus of this year’s competition is exploring how citizenship extends beyond voting, covering topics like community organizing, peaceful protest, local activism, and holding institutions accountable—all core tenets of both MLK Jr. and Vaughn's legacies.
This competition for Local High School Students is co-sponsored by Furman University and Alpha Phi Alpha Greenville Foundation. The purpose of the competition is to encourage oratorical skills among students in the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King and Mr. Joseph Vaughn, who was the first African-American student at Furman University.
