Students Prepare for 2014 LDI Experience in June

Greenville, South Carolina - Students applying for the sponsored slots for Leadership Development Institute (LDI), met yesterday [May 19th] at 6:30 PM with LDI Committee members at Tabernacle Baptist Church on 400 Hudson Street in Greenville, South Carolina. Several students are hoping to be among the ten (10) sponsored slots available for this year's institute, which will be held this year at North Carolina A&T University on June 18-22, 2014. The institute is a part of the Leadership Development Citizenship Education Initiative, known as LDCEI, sponsored by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

This year marks the second year the Alpha Greenville Foundation is sponsoring a group of students and chaperone to attend the institute. Last year, five Greenville students attended the institute, along with the eighteen students sent from South Carolina. The LDCEI, started in 1983, had its first Leadership Development Institute in Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina and is sponsored by the Southern Region of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. It focuses on developing High school student's Leadership, Citizenship and Educational skills by inspiring students' confidence, knowledge and social skills. Foundation members will be working with potential participants to prepare and submit their applications this week. Student Participants were expected to attend Monday's preparation meeting and submit a complete application to Travis Smith before the end of this week. This year's institute continues to be held at NC A&T University in Greensboro, North Carolina and will have students attending from seven states, including North Carolina, Tennessee, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, and Georgia. Monday's meeting was held to explain the student's expectations for institute and to answer any questions from students and parents about LDI. Information packets were passed out to both parents and students detailing their requirements, timeline, and travel arrangements for the event. During the meeting student from last year's institute gave his impressions with the Institute. "I met friends from across the region that I continue to talk to them over the last year" said Justin Sullivan McAdams, "I am looking forward to seeing them again this year". Justin is a graduating senior at Eastside High School this year and plans to attend Coastal Carolina University in the Fall.

Sponsorship for the ten slots is being provided by AGF and travel expenses will be provided by the South Carolina District of Alpha Chapters of which Gamma Gamma Lambda Chapter is the sponsoring Chapter for the Area. Sponsored LDI slots are very limited and are being selected on a first-come, first served basis.
